How do you manage your time?

by Brian on

Okay, well today’s post is about Time Management as I am sure you know and have probably heard about already. I am sure that you know in order to really be successful in any endeavour you need to know how to manage your time effectively.

I heard John Maxwell say that he went to a Time Management conference once and the speaker said that Time is like identical suitcases, however some people can pack more items into the cases than others because they know what to pack!

That is so true, so what we are talking about is not just time management, but life management! We need to know how to manage our lives or else our times will be wasted doing activities that do not yield the highest return for our lives.I think one of the best ways to master time is to ask ourselves how do we W.I.N. Win stands for What’s Important Now!!

Now think about that for a second. What’s important in your life right now, not yesterday, not last year, not 10 years in the future….What’s important Now!!! If right now you are doing a degree that can seriously affect your financial life by giving you a promotion in your job after finishing it, then most likely this is what is important right now because if you accomplish this objective your family will be happier, your stress levels will be decreased, your job will benefit with your new expertise etc. What happens is that we have a tendency to major on minor things e.g. your car isn’t working so well and the time you spend fixing that car, you could have spent it doing your final year project for the degree. Some of you may say but if I do not fix my car I will not be able to get to school or to my job and my answer to that is why not travel for the time being until you finish that project so after that you can spend time fixing the car!

What I am trying to say is that only you know what is important in your life right now and if you don’t take the time to focus on the important things you will be robbing not only yourself but your entire world! Once you know what is important and something else arises, you need to ask is this more important than what I am doing now and if it isn’t then you need to see how you can work around it e.g. can you outsource the problem to someone else, can it wait etc.

By focusing on what is important in your life right now, you free yourself to do those things and eliminate all the time wasters and distractions that will come to keep you away from the prize!

So your homework for today is to write down everything that is important for you to do right now and prioritize them in order of importance.

Focus on the top ones then move down the list.

Next you need to take a look at all time wasters that may come your way and think of how you can eliminate them from your life.

Do this for one week and notice the changes in your life and I will like to hear your comments on this.

This is just a small tip on time management and I do plan to release other plans in future posts. Thanks for reading this and have a productive day!
