How are you all today. Today I want to share with you a very strange but effective method of goal setting that I have learnt and it is from a guy named Raymond Aaron who seems to really know his stuff and he shares a method that I have never heard from any other success coach out there in the history of personal development and it is the MTO way of setting goals.

So I am sure you are wondering what the MTO stands for and it stands for Minimum, Target and Outrageous.

So what he suggests is that you have a monthly goal and you divide it up into these 3 categories.

Minimum means that this is the least you can do right now based on your past experience on a goal.

Target means its a bit over minimum but it is still a stretch

Outrageous means that you do not think you may be able to do it over the month

Here is an example to help you understand the concept better.

Right now I recently bought a mac and it has this really cool program called Imovie to make videos and edit them professionally so I want to learn how to use the program so that is my goal. Using the method I mentioned before

M- Go to lynda.com and get Imovie tutorial.

T- Watch 5 videos teaching me how to use the program

O- Watch all videos and make a video for a friend demonstrating how good I am in Imovie.

Now if you notice from the above example, the M is something that is very easy to do and you should achieve it. The T was a little bit of a stretch but it is doable. The O is the hardest of them all and may require you to do a lot more work.

The purpose of this exercise is for you to be able to at least get your Minimum met each month and that may motivate you to even go after the Target. If you are really zealous you may achieve the Outrageous.

The good thing about this method is that it allows you to make some progress over the month rather than being like most people who never even take 1 step forward to the achievement of their goal.

This is an excellent way to start writing your goals now and begin to work on the minimum each month and celebrating your small victories which will one day add up to a lot of success in your life.

Ok now that is one extremely serious question that everyone needs to answer at some point in their life. How many people just go through life without even pondering this question? How many people work in jobs that they hate because they never took the time to ponder this question carefully!!!

So what do you really want from life? Have you ever thought about this question before? Tony Robbins says that the quality of your life is determined by the quality of the questions that you ask yourself and this is one extremely important question you need to ask yourself.

You see most people tend to sell themselves short and start to settle for less than they deserve because they never took the time to decide what they want from life. Most people are married to the wrong spouse, they work in the wrong job, they do the wrong things, they just have no idea what they want in life because they never took the time to find out what they want.

Mark Twain said that ‘I can help anyone get what they want. The problem is I can’t seem to find anyone who can tell me what they want.’ That is a good quote from the legendary writer. What do you really want in life? When we were younger we knew what we wanted to become when we grew up. Now that we have grown up we begin to rationalize as to why we could never be these things and we lose the little dreamer that we had inside of us when we were children.

You need to learn to decide what you want from life and go after these things. Decide the kind of mate you want then go and get her. Most marriages are failing because people are willing to settle for anyone and not the one they deserve. Some may marry a rich person for their money and then wonder why they aren’t feeling fulfilled in their marriage!!!

Some people go after jobs because they hear it pays well and then when they finally get it, they are ready to quit cause they do not feel fulfilled in their jobs. My advice to you who are reading this right now, is to take tomorrow off and begin to ponder what you want in your life. What kind of job, what kind of skills, what kind of mate, what kind of car etc do you want from this life.

After doing this you need to ask yourself another important question. That question is -Who do I need to be to get all of these things? Because in order to get things you never had, you have to become someone you’ve never been!!! Then begin to work to become such a person. It will not happen overnight but step by step, day by day, skill by skill, habit by habit you will begin to move further towards the things you want from life and not the things you are willing to settle for in life.

So I leave you with the same question. What do you want from life!!!

Ok my friends. I have a quick question to ask you. Have you ever set a goal and did not achieve it? Really think about that. Have you ever set a goal and did not achieve it? I am sure you must have. I know you must have. Many people write down all their goals and yet for some reason or the other never achieve them? Why is this? Why is it that some people can set goals and achieve almost all of them, while others set goals and achieve only a few of them?

I will give you the answer to that question in a few minutes so just hold on and continue to read the rest of this post! There are many people in this world whose main goal is to lose weight. I am sure you know someone like that. Yet for some reason or the other they start going from one diet program to the next and then every time they fail to lose weight they blame the diet program or their mentor or someone. Most of these people who fail in this way did not even follow the program or their mentors instruction fully. In fact the main reason why they did not achieve their goal is that they weren’t willing to do what it takes!!! Did you hear what I just said? Let me put it in a different way! They weren’t willing to pay the price!!!

Anything you are trying to achieve in life has a price attached to it and if you are not willing to pay the price you will not be able to achieve it. What you need to do is to learn to count the cost first before making a decision to achieve a certain goal. I want you to read that last sentence again because if you allow that to sink in to your mind, it will save you countless time, energy and money.

You need to ask yourself what is the cost involved in achieving such a goal. If you dream to be a doctor then you must be willing to pay the price of years of study as well as years without much freedom to do what you want to do. If you’re not willing to do that then do not set out to be a doctor. You will fail at it I guarantee you. Every time you fail at achieving your goals it affects your self esteem and it prevents you from moving forward and trying to set new goals.

So here’s what I want you to do. Every time you think about going after a particular goal, find out what the cost is to achieve such a goal. Only after you find this out should you decide whether you are willing to set such a goal or not.

If you do this for each goal I am sure, you will say no to the goals that do not really deserve your attention and you will say yes to the ones that do. This will save you many years of frustration if you do this. If you enjoyed this article or have something to add, feel free to leave a comment and socially bookmark this at your favourite site! Thanks for reading this and let this day be the best day ever!!!
